LIFE SKILLSSTEPPING INTO ADOLESCENCE WORKSHOP
‘Life flies by, and it's easy to get lost in the blur.’ Adolescence is a period when a child faces inner emotional upheaval. One experiences mood-swings, volatility and lack of impulse control. As such, the child needs care and concern from the adults. Teachers play a pivotal role in understanding the minds of students in this age group. Suncity School 37 D, took this initiative to promote awareness in the students by organizing an interactive workshop ‘Stepping into Adolescence’ for grade VI and VII students; wherein Ms Shruti Seth, the school counsellor enlightened them about the biological changes of puberty and psychological awakenings. The workshop was concluded with a Q&A session and a reflection sheet. It was indeed a great learning experience for all the students stepping into teenage. ENGLISHA literature piece with the message of staying positive in life was taken up to begin the month. Pollyanna – The Game’. This was introduced through a video clip showing the gist of the chapter. Students discussed the various aspects of the story from the story comprehension, to prediction, and vocabulary from the story in small teams. They made connection with the story and tried to relate the situation to their lives. Students then consolidated their learning in the written form in their notebooks. During the Language, Sst and Performing arts integration week -19th -23rd August, in small teams created their own short stories with focus on different genres and presented it in front of a larger audience in the form of a role play. Following this, students started their research by interviewing the teachers and their peers to find the different sources of water – rain water, underground water, lakes, wells etc. They also had a discussion to understand the various processes related to water cycle like evaporation, transpiration, condensation etc. As a culmination activity, students designed a poster to create awareness about conservation of water. Biology: By 'life,' we mean a thing that can nourish itself and grow and decay. ..... yet the foundation for the theory of evolution is life originating from non-living chemicals ...To differentiate between the living and the non-living things, the students went for a nature walk. Listed the things observed and sorted them into living and non-living. The limited resources available in an environment promote competition in which organisms of the same or different species struggle to survive. ... …Charles Darwin suggested that “survival of the fittest” was the basis for organic evolution. To survive in the changing environment one has to struggle, bring changes in oneself and adapt to the surroundings. To learn about adaptation in various living beings the students were given a food for thought to observe various living beings and ponder over why are they different? Why the camel has a hump, padded feet and long eyelashes whereas fish and birds have a streamlined body? If lotus has broad leaves then why do leaves shrink in cactus? They researched, shared, presented and thus understood how important it is to adapt. Chemistry: Although Nature needs thousands or millions of years to create a new species, man needs only a few dozen years to destroy one. How and why all this is being done? The Grade VI students took an initiative for this Cause ‘n’ Effect Analysis and are in the process of finding solution to it. In continuation with the activity of the last month that included nature walk, segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable substances; and group discussions, they took other initiatives to make August -an Awesome August. They explored about managing biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste to Protect, Preserve and Promote Mother Earth. The Young Eco-Suncitizens visited the school composting area accompanied by the facilitator and the school gardener. They enquired about the process of composting and concluded that composting is better than burning garbage and the manure is better than chemical fertilizers. They collected various news clippings related to dumping of plastic in the landfills and were much inspired by the Independence Day Speech of Our revered Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi Ji and raise the voice in unison to Make India Plastic Free. They made collage using clippings while working in groups. The class was divided in two groups, one group highlighted the cause ‘n’ effect whereas the other suggested the solution. They also had an interaction with the house-keeping staff and queried about the garbage management. Not only this, but these Eco-buddies conducted a Swacchata Survey as well, wherein they collected data for how much we all are responsible and aware about the importance and need of cleanliness. Well, what these Sensitive Suncitizens are going to do with this data?...You will come to know about it in Swacchh September! ICTStudents learnt about the ‘Mail Merge’ feature. They made 5 name data source file and address book, created the main document and merged them. They applied their understanding of this feature to print 2 merged letters using Mail Merge feature.
